Most drainage problems on a build do not start in the ground. They start on paper, weeks earlier, when a level was misread or a connection point was assumed rather than confirmed. By the time a crew turns up to dig, the cost of that error is fixed. We have spent close to twenty years putting drainage and civil infrastructure in the ground across South Auckland and Franklin, and the pattern holds on almost every job: the work that looks simple from the office is the work that punishes you for skipping the detail.

Draeinail is a civil and drainage contractor based in Pukekohe, with a permanent crew in Queenstown as well. Around twenty-five people, registered drainlayers among them, run our sites day to day. We are not a one-truck operation that hires plant when a job lands. We own the fleet, we hold the accreditations, and we carry our own traffic management, which means the things that usually slow a drainage job down sit inside our control rather than someone else's diary.

That matters most to the people who carry the programme risk: developers, head contractors, project managers, and builders who need a section connected, a subdivision serviced, or a stormwater system that'll pass inspection the first time. What a registered drainlayer actually does

A drainlayer installs and connects the systems that move water and waste away from a site: foul sewer, stormwater, subsoil drainage, and the connections that tie a property into the public network. In New Zealand the trade is regulated for a reason. Get a gradient wrong on a gravity line and the pipe silts up; get a connection wrong and you contaminate a stormwater system with sewage. Registration exists so the person signing off the work has been assessed against a standard, not just told what to do on the day.

On our sites the registered drainlayer owns the technical call. They confirm invert levels before the trench goes in, set the fall on gravity systems, and make sure pipe bedding and backfill match what the design and the network owner require. They're also the ones who deal with the council inspection and the as-built record, so the paperwork that follows the pipe is right.

Gravity, subsoil and pumped systems

Most of what we install is gravity drainage, which lives or dies on accurate falls. Foul sewer and stormwater run downhill at a designed gradient; too flat and solids settle, too steep and the liquid outruns the solids and leaves them behind. Subsoil and land drainage take groundwater away from foundations, retaining walls and pavements before it becomes a structural problem. Where gravity won't do the job, pumped systems and rising mains move flow uphill to a discharge point. The common thread is that none of it tolerates guesswork on levels.

Civil and drainage capability

Drainage is the core trade, but most of our work sits inside larger civil packages. We dig and shore deep trenches, install manholes and chambers, lay reticulation for subdivisions, build the civil works around energy infrastructure, and handle the enabling earthworks that get a site ready for the structures that follow. Because the same crew handles the drainage and the wider civils, the interfaces that usually cause delay are managed by one party rather than argued over by two.

The sectors we work across reflect that breadth. Each one carries its own standards, its own inspection regime, and its own tolerance for error.

  • Infrastructure: public sewer, stormwater mains and the deep civil works that sit under roads and reserves.

  • Drainage: foul, stormwater, subsoil and land drainage for residential, commercial and civil sites.

  • Subdivision: full reticulation and enabling works to get raw land titled and serviced.

  • Energy: civil works around the electricity network and the structures that support it.

Plant and fleet

A drainage and civil contractor is only as capable as the gear it can put on site, and we run a deep fleet rather than hiring in at the margin. The core is eleven excavators from five to thirty-five tonnes, which lets us match the machine to the trench instead of forcing one size onto every job. We back that with three JCB telehandlers for materials handling, a range of trucks and trailers, and an articulated transporter rated to twenty-five tonnes, so we move our own plant between sites on our own schedule.

For the technical end of the work we run the specialist kit that keeps a trench safe and a programme moving:

  • A hydro-vac for non-destructive excavation around live services, where a toothed bucket would do damage.

  • Bypass and dewatering pumps to keep flow moving and trenches workable while we cut into a live system.

  • A full set of trench and manhole shields so deep excavation stays inside the rules rather than relying on luck.

Owning this gear is the difference between holding a programme date and waiting on a hire yard. When the plant is ours, mobilising faster is a decision we get to make.

Safety, accreditation and how we run a site

Drainage is among the more dangerous trades in construction, and most of the danger is in the trench. Unsupported excavation, live services, confined spaces, and plant working next to people on foot are the things that hurt crews, so we treat them as the core of how a site is run rather than a box to tick afterwards.

Our people are Site Safe trained, and crews are competency-assessed against the Construction Safety Council Tier 1 framework, so capability is verified rather than assumed. We hold confined space, first aid, traffic control and driver endorsements across the team, we work to documented safe operating procedures, and we run a custom health and safety system built around the work we actually do, not a generic template pulled off a shelf. Because we carry our own traffic management, the controls around a live road or footpath are ours to set up and ours to answer for.

The fastest way to blow a programme is an unsafe trench that has to be stopped, re-shored and re-inspected. Running safety properly is not a cost on the job; on a deep drainage job it is the schedule.

Track record on public and commercial infrastructure

The clearest measure of a drainage contractor is the company it keeps on serious infrastructure. We've laid public sewer on Penlink for Fulton Hogan, delivered Tauriko enabling works for Downer, and built stormwater upgrades at Paerata Station and at the Wiri EMU depot for TRS.

On the energy side we've delivered civils subcontracted to Ventia and across Vector's programme, and we completed a Spark data centre upgrade in Takanini where service tolerances are unforgiving. We've built a detention tank for a Ryman site and delivered subdivision works at Hobsonville for TDM. The common thread is that head contractors and asset owners hand us packages where a missed inspection or a failed connection has real consequences, and they hand them to us again.

Our base in Pukekohe puts the whole southern and western growth corridor inside a comfortable working radius, and we hold a permanent crew in Queenstown for South Island work. Across the Auckland region we work in Pukekohe, Franklin, Papakura, Takanini, Drury, Karaka, Paerata, Pokeno, Manukau, Wiri, Hobsonville, Whangaparaoa, Silverdale, Kumeu, Riverhead and the areas around them.

Frequently asked questions

Are your drainlayers registered?

Yes. We employ registered drainlayers, and the registered drainlayer on a job owns the technical sign-off, the council inspection and the as-built record. That's the person who confirms levels before the trench goes in and answers for the work once it's in the ground. Registration is the line between a connection that passes first time and one that comes back.

Can you handle the civil works as well as the drainage?

Yes, and most of our jobs are exactly that. We run the drainage inside a wider civil package: deep trenching and shoring, manholes and chambers, subdivision reticulation, energy civils and enabling earthworks. Because the same crew and the same plant cover both, you're not coordinating a drainage subbie against a civil subbie and wearing the gap between them.

Do you bring your own plant and traffic management?

Yes. We own our fleet, from five-tonne excavators up to thirty-five, plus telehandlers, a twenty-five-tonne transporter, a hydro-vac and dewatering plant, and we run our own traffic management. Owning the gear means we hold programme dates rather than waiting on a hire yard, and managing our own traffic control means the setup around a live road is ours to answer for.
