Manholes Explained — Sizes, Depths and What Installation Involves

Every drainage network is really two things: the pipe that carries the flow, and the manholes that let people reach it. A manhole is the access chamber built wherever pipes join, change direction, change grade or change size, and it is where the network is inspected, tested and maintained for the rest of its life. On a subdivision there might be one every fifty to a hundred metres of main; on a deep trunk line each one is a serious structure in its own right.

They also carry more of the budget than most people expect. The pipe between two manholes is often the straightforward part; the chambers at each end involve the biggest holes, the heaviest lifts and the most finishing work on the line. What a manhole does

Three jobs. It gives maintenance crews access to the pipe for inspection, CCTV and clearing. It manages the hydraulics wherever the flow has to turn, drop or merge, using a shaped concrete floor called benching to steer the water cleanly through. And it serves as the fixed reference point of the network: levels, as-builts and future connections are all set out from the manholes.

Sizes and depths

Standard chambers on residential work run around a metre or so across, typically precast concrete rings stacked on a base. As pipes get bigger and junctions get more complicated, chambers step up, and the largest precast structures on trunk lines run to several metres in diameter. Depth follows the pipe: a shallow lot connection might need a chamber a metre and a half deep, while a trunk sewer manhole can go many metres down. Beyond certain depths the chambers carry intermediate landings, ladders and safety grills, and the lids step up to heavy-duty castings where they sit in a road.

How a manhole goes in

  1. Excavate the shaft, larger than the chamber itself, with shields or shoring supporting the ground

  2. Dewater if the water table is up; a manhole base cannot be set in soup

  3. Pour or place the base and set it exactly to the design level, because every pipe invert on the run depends on it

  4. Connect the incoming and outgoing pipes, sealed at each penetration

  5. Stack and seal the riser sections to finished level

  6. Bench the floor: shaping the channels so flow runs through without turbulence or settlement of solids

  7. Fit steps, grills where required, and the lid; backfill and compact in layers around the structure

The benching is where experience shows. Done well, the flow glides through and the chamber stays clean for decades. Done badly, solids settle, gases build, and the maintenance crews curse the installer every visit.

You can read a drainage contractor’s standards down a manhole. The pipe hides its sins underground; the chamber shows them to everyone who lifts the lid.

What makes manholes expensive

  • Depth: every extra metre means more excavation, more shoring, more dewatering and more riser sections

  • Diameter: big chambers need big holes and crane time for the heavy precast sections

  • Ground: rock slows the dig; running sand and high groundwater demand serious support and pumping

  • Location: a chamber in a live road brings traffic management and reinstatement a paddock never sees

  • Connections: every extra pipe entering the chamber adds penetrations, sealing and benching complexity

This is why drainage schedules price manholes individually rather than burying them in a pipe rate; two chambers of the same size can cost wildly different amounts in different ground.

Acceptance and sign-off

Public manholes are inspected before they vest in the network owner, and the tests are unforgiving: alignment, watertightness, benching quality, step and grill placement, lid level against the finished surface. CCTV of the connecting lines and accurate as-builts complete the picture. Frequently asked questions

How far apart do manholes have to be?

Spacing is set by the network owner’s code of practice, driven by how far maintenance equipment can reach along the pipe. On typical residential mains that means a chamber roughly every fifty to a hundred metres, plus one at every junction or change of direction.

Why did the price of two similar manholes differ so much?

Almost always the ground and the depth. A dry, shallow chamber in a lot is quick work; the same chamber two metres deeper in wet ground under a road carries shoring, pumping and traffic management that can multiply the cost.

Can you add a new connection to an existing manhole?

Usually yes, subject to the network owner’s approval. The chamber is cored, the new pipe sealed in, and the benching reworked to carry the extra flow. It is careful work in a live chamber, with the confined-space controls that implies.

Who owns the manholes once the job is finished?

Chambers on the public network vest in the network owner after acceptance, and they maintain them from then on. Private chambers inside a lot stay with the property. The boundary between the two is set at the connection point and recorded in the as-builts.

Do all manholes need confined-space entry?

Treat every one as if it does. Gases collect in chambers, and entry without testing, ventilation and a trained crew is how drainage kills people. Our teams carry confined-space training as standard, and it is a fair question to ask of anyone you let into your network.
