Drainage Contractor — Paerata & Paerata Rise

Paerata and Paerata Rise are filling in fast. What was farmland on the rail line between Pukekohe and Drury is now staged residential development, and every stage of it runs on drainage that has to be designed, built and signed off before a single house lot can settle. Get the civil infrastructure wrong and the whole programme stalls behind it.

Draeinail is a civil and drainage contractor based in Pukekohe, ten minutes down the road. We have worked across Franklin for about twenty years, and we built the stormwater upgrades at Paerata Station for TRS. That is local knowledge you can stand on: we know the ground conditions, the council requirements and the depots that supply this corridor, because we are part of it.

Drainage in this part of Franklin is not one job; it is several, and they have to be sequenced correctly. Foul sewer and stormwater are separate networks with separate rules, and on a subdivision they get installed in a deliberate order so that later trades are not digging up what earlier trades just laid. We run both, plus the connections, the manholes and the stormwater treatment devices that consents increasingly require.

The Paerata corridor carries a mix of clay and reactive soils, and the water table sits high in places, particularly near the rail line and the lower-lying paddocks. That matters because a trench that holds water is a trench that wants to collapse, and a pipe laid in saturated ground without proper bedding will not hold its grade. We plan dewatering before we open the ground, not after the side wall has slumped into the excavation.

Foul sewer, stormwater and the order they go in

On a typical residential stage, the deep services go first. Foul sewer usually sits deepest, so it is laid early while the trench is open and the shoring is in. Stormwater follows, then the lateral connections out to each lot, then the manholes and inspection points are brought to level. Get the sequence right and the road layers and kerbing can follow cleanly; get it wrong and you are re-excavating finished surfaces, which costs time you did not budget for.

Pipe is laid to grade on a properly compacted bed, surrounded with the specified backfill, and proven before it is covered. We pressure-test and CCTV the lines so the as-builts hold up at handover. Industry practice for gravity sewer and stormwater runs to standards like AS/NZS 3500 and the relevant council code of practice; we build to whatever the consent and the engineer specify, and we document it as we go.

What we build, and the plant that builds it

A drainage contractor is only as good as the gear it can put on site and the operators running it. Draeinail owns its fleet, so we are not waiting on hire-company availability when a stage is ready to move. We run eleven excavators from five to thirty-five tonne, three JCB telehandlers, trucks and trailers, and an articulated transporter rated to twenty-five tonne for shifting our own plant between sites.

For the wet work specifically, we carry a hydro-vac for safe non-destructive digging around live services, bypass and dewatering pumps for keeping trenches workable, and trench and manhole shields so crews can work at depth safely. We also run our own traffic management, which means a road or berm closure does not become a separate procurement exercise that holds the whole job up.

The drainage that connects to a public network has to be installed and certified by people qualified to do it, and that qualification is not optional. It is the difference between a connection the council accepts and one it makes you dig back up.

On a staged subdivision the drainage sets the pace for everything behind it. If the deep services are late or fail their test, the roads, the kerbs and the lots all wait. The contractor who owns the plant and the drainlayers is the contractor who keeps the programme moving.

How a Paerata drainage job runs, start to finish

Most of the friction on a civil job comes from poor sequencing and surprises in the ground. We try to take both out early. Here is the shape of a typical stage, from first site visit to a council-accepted asset.

  1. Site visit and review. We walk the site with you, read the consent drawings and the geotech, and confirm levels, services and access before anyone breaks ground.

  2. Locate and protect. Existing services are located, and we use the hydro-vac to expose live assets safely rather than guessing with a bucket.

  3. Set up traffic management and dewatering. Closures go in, pumps and bypass are staged, and shielding is on site before the first trench opens.

  4. Excavate, bed and lay to grade. Foul sewer first where it is deepest, then stormwater, then lateral connections, each on a compacted bed with the specified surround.

  5. Manholes, structures and treatment devices. Precast structures are placed with the telehandlers and brought to level; any stormwater treatment device is installed to spec.

  6. Test, CCTV and prove. Lines are pressure-tested and camera-surveyed, and any defect is fixed before cover, not after.

  7. Backfill, compact and reinstate. Trenches are backfilled in layers and compacted, surfaces reinstated, and the site left ready for the next trade.

  8. As-builts and handover. We hand over the records the council and your engineer need to accept the asset and release the stage.

Because we self-deliver each of those steps, there is one crew accountable for the whole drainage scope. You are not chasing a digging subbie, a separate pump-hire firm and a traffic management company to find out why the trench is still open.

Can you take the whole civil scope, or only the drainage?

We self-deliver the drainage scope end to end, and we carry the plant and crews for broader civil works alongside it: earthworks, deep services, structures and our own traffic management. We work as a subcontractor to head contractors on large packages and direct to developers on subdivision work, so the scope flexes to how your job is set up.
