Civil & Drainage Contractor — Queenstown

Queenstown does not forgive shortcuts. The ground moves between schist, gravel and saturated lake-edge fill; winter freezes the trench you left open on Friday; and a single road closure on a steep subdivision can cost a head contractor a week. We run a permanent crew here for exactly that reason. Draeinail Construction has been a civil and drainage contractor for around 20 years, built out of Pukekohe in South Auckland, and the Queenstown team is not a fly-in arrangement. They live here, they know which subgrades drain and which ones do not, and they work to the same standards we hold across our Auckland infrastructure programme.

That matters when you are a developer, a project manager or a head contractor trying to de-risk a programme. You are not just buying an excavator and an operator. You are buying registered drainlayers, documented safe operating procedures, our own traffic management, and a plant fleet sized for real civil work rather than landscaping. When the inspector turns up, the as-builts are in order; when the weather turns, the dewatering pumps are already on site.

What our Queenstown crew covers

The Queenstown team handles the full civil and drainage scope, not a thin slice of it. On a subdivision that means the wet services and the earthworks that sit underneath them: stormwater and wastewater reticulation, manholes and chambers, soakage and detention where consents call for it, road and lot drainage, and the bulk and detailed earthworks that get a site to formation level. On commercial and infrastructure jobs it extends to deeper trunk mains, culverts, retaining and the muck-shifting that makes the rest of the build possible.

We carry registered drainlayers on the crew, which is the part that trips up generalist earthworks outfits. Drainage that has to be certified is not a dig-and-backfill exercise. Gradients have to hold, bedding has to be right, and the connections have to pass inspection the first time, because a failed test on a buried line in Queenstown winter is an expensive thing to dig back up. Having the drainlayer and the machine operator on the same crew, answering to the same supervisor, is what keeps that tight.

Subdivision and land development

Subdivision is where most of our Queenstown work lives. We take a consented set of civil drawings and turn them into serviced lots: cut and fill to design levels, sediment and erosion control that survives a real rain event, reticulated storm and waste, and the lot connections each section needs. We have run subdivision drainage and earthworks elsewhere too, including TDM subdivision works at Hobsonville in Auckland, so the workflow from bulk earthworks through to lot-ready is well drilled.

Commercial, infrastructure and energy civils

Beyond residential land we do the heavier civil and the trades-services side that sits behind larger builds. Across our wider programme that has included public sewer works on Penlink for Fulton Hogan, Tauriko enabling works for Downer, stormwater upgrades at Paerata Station and the Wiri EMU depot for TRS, and energy civils subcontracted to Ventia and across Vector’s programme. We have also done a Spark data centre upgrade in Takanini and a Ryman detention tank. The Queenstown crew draws on the same systems and the same plant pool that delivered those.

How we run a drainage and civil package

A clean handover starts well before anyone breaks ground. We would rather spend an hour on the drawings and the dial-before-you-dig service locates than lose a day to a struck cable. Here is the shape of a typical package, from the first site walk to the as-builts.

  1. Pre-start and setout. We confirm levels and offsets against the civil drawings, identify services, and set out the runs and structures so the crew is digging to a plan, not a guess.

  2. Erosion and sediment control. Controls go in first and stay maintained. On a Queenstown slope this is not box-ticking; it is what keeps fines out of the catchment and the consent intact.

  3. Bulk and detailed earthworks. Cut to fill, compaction tested where the spec requires it, formation brought to design level ready for the services beneath it.

  4. Drainage installation. Trenching with shields where depth or ground demands, correct bedding and haunching, pipework laid to grade, structures set, and dewatering running where the water table or weather calls for it.

  5. Testing, inspection and connection. Lines tested, council or engineer inspections booked and passed, live connections made.

  6. Reinstatement and as-builts. Surfaces reinstated, site left clean, and accurate as-built records handed over so the next trade and the certifier have what they need.

Two things sit across every step. The first is traffic management: we run our own, so a lane closure or a site-access plan does not wait on a third party’s availability. The second is the safety system, which is not a folder on a shelf. Crews are competency-assessed, the safe operating procedures are written for the work in front of them, and the supervisor owns it on site.

The cheapest part of a drainage package is the trench. The expensive part is the one that fails its test, gets dug up in July, and pushes every following trade to the right. We price and build to avoid the second one.

Plant and equipment behind the crew

Capability comes down to having the right machine on the day, not the nearest one for hire. We run a fleet that is built for civil work, and the Queenstown crew pulls from it. The core of it:

  • 11 excavators from 5 to 35 tonne, so the machine matches the trench rather than the other way around

  • 3 JCB telehandlers for materials handling, structures and awkward lifts

  • Trucks and trailers, plus an articulated transporter rated to 25 tonne for moving plant between sites

  • A hydro-vac for safe non-destructive digging around live services

  • Bypass and dewatering pumps to keep trenches workable when the water table or weather does not cooperate

  • Trench shields and manhole shields so deep work stays compliant and safe

  • Our own traffic management gear

The range of excavator sizes is the part developers should care about most. A 5-tonne machine threading lot connections and a 35-tonne machine cutting a trunk main are different jobs, and owning both means we are not compromising the work to fit whatever was available. The hydro-vac matters around brownfield and energy sites, where a struck service is a safety event, not just a delay.

Accreditation, safety and certification

On infrastructure jobs the paperwork is part of the deliverable. Crews are Site Safe trained and competency-assessed to the Construction Safety Council Tier 1 framework. We hold confined space, first aid, traffic control and the relevant driver endorsements across the team, run documented safe operating procedures, and operate a custom health and safety system rather than a generic template.

For the drainage itself, registered drainlayers carry the certification responsibility. That is the difference between a line that is buried and a line that is signed off. Standards on pipe materials, minimum gradients and bedding are set by code and by the project engineer; we build to them and document that we did, which is what lets an inspection pass cleanly and an as-built stand up later.

For a head contractor, the practical value is simple. We slot into your prequalification and your site safety plan without becoming a problem to manage. The records are there, the competencies are current, and the supervisor speaks the same language as your project manager.

How do you handle traffic management and site safety on our job?
