Pump Station Installation — Auckland

Gravity does most of the work in a drainage network, but it has limits. Where a site sits below the public sewer, where a subdivision drains away from the network, or where the fall simply is not there, wastewater has to be lifted. That is a pump station: a wet well, pumps, a rising main and the controls that run them, engineered to move sewage or stormwater uphill to a point where gravity can take over again.

Pump stations are unforgiving work. They sit at the lowest point of the site, which means the deepest excavation, the wettest ground and the least room for error. They also have to be accepted by the network owner before anything connects, so the standard is not what the builder will tolerate; it is what Watercare or the council will sign off. Draeinail has installed pump stations on subdivisions and developments across Auckland as part of twenty years of three-waters work, and it remains one of the more demanding things we do.

When a site needs a pump station

The trigger is always level. A gravity sewer needs continuous fall from the source to the network, and when the design cannot achieve it, a pressure section takes over. On subdivisions that usually means one communal station serving a group of lots that sit low against the network. On commercial sites it can be a stormwater station lifting runoff out of a basin or basement level. Occasionally the economics drive it the other way: a pump station and a small rising main can be cheaper than an extremely deep gravity line, even where gravity is technically possible.

What a pump station actually consists of

  • The wet well: a deep precast chamber, typically the deepest structure on the job, where flows collect

  • The pumps, usually duty and standby, so a single failure never stops the station

  • The rising main: a welded pressure pipe carrying flow uphill to the gravity network

  • Valves, level controls and alarms that start, stop and protect the pumps

  • The connection point where the pressure section discharges back into gravity

The design is the engineer’s; the build quality is ours. Every one of those elements has an authority specification behind it, and the sign-off at the end depends on all of them being right.

How installation runs

  1. Excavate and support the shaft, dewatering as the hole comes down below the water table

  2. Place and seal the precast chambers, benched and sealed to spec

  3. Install pumps, pipework, valves and controls

  4. Lay and pressure-test the rising main, welded and tested as one continuous line

  5. Commission: flow tests, alarms, telemetry, and the authority walkover that accepts the station

Why the excavation is the hard part

A pump station well often goes deeper than any pipe trench on the job, and it goes in at the wettest corner of the site by definition. That means shoring or shields, serious dewatering, and a crew that has worked at depth before. It is the same discipline as our deep drainage work: support the ground properly, keep the water down, and never put someone in an unsupported hole. Our crews carry confined-space tickets and are competency-assessed to the Construction Safety Council Tier 1 framework, because a wet well is a confined space from the day it is built.

A pump station is judged twice: once by the engineer at commissioning, and every wet night after that by whether it runs. Build it to the second standard and the first looks after itself.

Getting it accepted

A station that works but cannot be signed off is a liability. Acceptance means the materials match the approved design, the welds and pressure tests are documented, the CCTV and as-builts are lodged, and the commissioning results sit inside the authority’s limits. Because we do Watercare and Veolia connection work routinely, that paperwork discipline is built into how the job runs rather than bolted on at the end.

Frequently asked questions

Who designs the pump station, and who builds it?

The civil or wastewater engineer designs it and the network owner approves that design; we build and commission it to those documents. Where something in the design fights the ground conditions we find on site, we raise it early through the engineer rather than improvising in the hole.

How deep does the wet well go?

Whatever the design needs to collect the lowest lot, commonly several metres and sometimes well beyond a normal trench depth. Depth drives everything else: shoring, dewatering, crane time and programme, which is why station wells are priced on the ground, not off a rate card.

Can a pump station serve a single house?

Yes. Low-pressure sewer systems use a small pump unit on each lot instead of one communal station, and some networks prefer them where gravity cannot reach. Which way a development goes is a design and authority decision, and both are work we do.

What about ongoing maintenance?

Communal stations that vest in the network owner are maintained by them once accepted; private stations remain the owner’s responsibility. Either way the station carries alarms and telemetry so a fault announces itself, and good access for the maintenance crews is part of the design we build to.

What does a pump station cost?

It depends on depth, ground, flow and how far the rising main runs, so any number quoted before design means little. What we can do is price a designed station accurately, and flag the ground risks that move the number before they become variations.
