Draeinail Construction has been a civil and drainage contractor for around twenty years, based in Pukekohe in South Auckland's Franklin district, with a permanent crew working out of Queenstown as well. What we move plant on
Our articulated transporter carries plant up to 25 tonne. That covers most of our excavator fleet in a single load, including the mid-weight diggers that do the bulk of trenching, bulk earthworks, and detention-tank dig-outs. For machines and attachments below that ceiling we run trucks and trailers configured for the load, so a telehandler, a smaller excavator, or a shield set moves cleanly without over-spec'd gear sitting idle.
The point of owning the transport is control. When the float belongs to us and the operator loading it is the same crew running the machine on site, the handover is tight. There's no waiting on a hire company's availability window, no unfamiliar driver guessing at tie-down points on a tracked machine, no gap where nobody owns the load.

Matching the trailer to the machine
Plant cartage isn't one-size. A 35-tonne class excavator, a 5-tonne machine, and a JCB telehandler each load, secure, and ride differently. We match the trailer and the restraint method to the specific machine and its centre of gravity, then check the combination against the route before anything rolls. Tracks, rubber tyres, articulation points, and quick-hitch attachments all change how a load behaves under braking and on camber, and we account for that up front rather than discovering it at the first roundabout.
How we plan a machinery move
A plant move starts well before the truck arrives. We confirm the machine's weight and dimensions, the access at both ends, and the route between them. South Auckland and the wider region carry a patchwork of weight limits, low bridges, narrow rural approaches, and town centres that don't suit an articulated float in peak traffic, so the route gets chosen deliberately, not by satnav.
Loading and unloading is where most plant damage and most of the risk lives. We set up on firm, level ground, keep people clear of the load zone, and use a spotter for every load and unload. The machine is walked on under control, positioned for weight distribution, then secured to its rated points. Nothing moves until the restraint is checked.
A typical move, step by step
Confirm machine weight, height, width, and length, plus any attachments travelling with it.
Assess access at the pickup and the destination: gate widths, ground bearing, overhead lines, turning room for the float.
Plan the route around weight limits, bridge heights, and traffic; arrange any permits or traffic management the move calls for.
Load on firm level ground with a spotter, positioning the machine for safe weight distribution.
Secure the machine to rated tie-down points and check the restraint before departure.
Transport, then unload under the same controlled conditions at the destination.
For wide or over-height loads, or where a move touches a live road corridor, we bring our own traffic management to the job. We don't sub that out and hope it lines up; it's part of the same crew and the same plan.

The reason our transport is reliable is that it's been proven on serious infrastructure. We've laid public sewer on Penlink for Fulton Hogan, delivered Tauriko enabling works for Downer, and built stormwater upgrades at Paerata Station and the Wiri EMU depot for TRS. We've subcontracted energy civils to Ventia and worked across Vector's programme, upgraded a Spark data centre in Takanini, built a Ryman detention tank, and carried out TDM subdivision works at Hobsonville.
Every one of those jobs needed plant on site, on time, and moved between work fronts as the programme shifted. Head contractors at that tier don't tolerate a machine that's late or damaged in transit, so our transport had to be dependable before any of this got built. The cartage capability isn't a sideline; it's the thing that lets the rest of the civil work run to programme.
Safety and compliance behind every move
Heavy plant on a public road is a serious load, and we treat it that way. Our crews are Site Safe trained and competency-assessed to the Construction Safety Council Tier 1 framework. The operators loading and securing machines hold the relevant driver endorsements, and the wider team carries confined space, first aid, and traffic control competencies for the civil work the plant supports.
Underneath that we run documented safe operating procedures and a custom health and safety system, so a plant move isn't improvised on the day. The method is written down, the load is restrained to rated points, and the route and traffic management are planned before the machine leaves the yard.
