Earthworks is where a project either gets de-risked early or quietly accumulates trouble for everyone downstream. Get the cut and fill wrong, miss a soft spot in the subgrade, or hand the drainage crew a platform that does not drain, and the cost lands on the head contractor weeks later. We have spent roughly twenty years moving dirt and laying pipe across South Auckland and beyond, and the through-line in every job that went well is the same: the earthworks were planned, surveyed, and built to take what came next.

When the same contractor cuts your platform and lays your stormwater, nobody is arguing at the interface about levels, falls, or who left the trench open. What earthworks actually covers on a real site
People say earthworks and mean very different things. On a greenfield subdivision it is bulk muck-shifting, mass haul, and shaping a site to a design surface. On a tight infill it is careful cut around services with a five-tonner and a lot of hand-finishing. On an infrastructure job it might be trench, bed, backfill and reinstate to a network authority spec. We do all of it, and the planning is different for each.
Bulk earthworks is about volume and balance. The aim is to move material once. We work the cut-to-fill balance off the design levels so you are not paying to truck spoil off site and clean fill back on if the numbers can be made to meet on site. Where the balance does not work, or where the material coming out is unsuitable, we cart it and bring in engineered fill instead. Either way you get told which it is, with reasons, before the trucks roll.
Detailed earthworks is the finer end: trimming to subgrade, forming building platforms to level and tolerance, digging foundations, and cutting service trenches that the drainlayers and electricians can actually work in. This is where having registered drainlayers in the same crew pays off, because the people cutting the trench understand the pipe that is going in it, the cover it needs, and the bedding it sits on.

Site preparation and stripping
Most jobs start with clearing and topsoil strip. We separate and stockpile topsoil where it can be reused for landscaping or sold off, set up the silt and sediment controls that the consent demands, and establish the haul roads and crossings so the heavy gear is not chewing up ground you want to keep. Good setup is unglamorous and it is the difference between a clean job and a muddy fight every time it rains.
Subgrade, soft spots and bad ground
The subgrade is the layer everything sits on, and it is where the surprises live. Soft, wet or organic material has to come out and be replaced with something that compacts. We undercut and replace, bring spoil up to a workable moisture content where we can, and proof-roll so weak areas show themselves before the pavement crew arrives rather than after. Where ground conditions are genuinely poor we will say so and work with the engineer on the fix, instead of burying the problem under a slab.
The plant we own, and why owning it matters
Plenty of outfits sub-hire their gear and their operators, which means your programme is hostage to someone else availability and someone else maintenance. We run our own fleet. That keeps the machines on your job when the programme says they should be, and it keeps the operators who know those machines in the seats.

The range of excavator sizes is the part developers tend to underrate. A 35-tonne machine moving bulk earth and a 5-tonne machine threading a trench between existing services are two different jobs, and a contractor with only the middle of that range ends up compromising on both. Owning the transporter means we move that plant ourselves, on our schedule, which takes one more variable out of the programme.
When the contractor cutting the platform is the same one laying the stormwater, the levels, the falls and the trench bedding all answer to one person. That single point of accountability is the whole argument for civil and drainage under one roof.
Safety and accreditation, because head contractors check
If you are a principal or a head contractor, you are carrying the duty for everyone on your site, and a subcontractor whose paperwork does not stack up is your problem the moment something goes wrong. Ours stacks up. Our crews are Site Safe trained and competency-assessed against the Construction Safety Council Tier 1 framework, which means the assessment is against a defined standard, not a self-declaration.
Across the team we hold confined space, first aid, traffic control and the driver endorsements the plant and trucks require. We work to documented safe operating procedures for the machines and tasks, and we run a custom health and safety system rather than a binder of generic templates that nobody reads. For prequalification, that translates into the records, SWMS and method statements you need to put us on site without a fight.
None of this is decoration. Deep trenching, live services, road-corridor work and heavy plant on shared ground are the situations that hurt people, and they are exactly the situations we are set up and ticketed for.
The kind of work we do, and who we do it for
We work across infrastructure, drainage, subdivision and energy, and the easiest way to show the range is the company we keep on site. We have built public sewer on the Penlink project for Fulton Hogan, and delivered enabling works at Tauriko for Downer. We have put in stormwater upgrades at Paerata Station and at the Wiri EMU depot for TRS.
On the energy side we deliver civils as a subcontractor to Ventia and across Vector programme of works, which is exacting ground to operate in given the live assets involved. We have also handled the earthworks and civils for a Spark data centre upgrade in Takanini, a detention tank for Ryman, and TDM subdivision works at Hobsonville. The common thread is tier-one principals and network authorities who do not hand work to crews that cannot perform.

How an earthworks engagement runs with us
We try to be predictable, because predictable is what keeps your programme intact. A typical engagement runs roughly like this:
Review the drawings, levels and geotech, walk the site, and flag anything in the design or the ground that will bite later
Price the work against the actual conditions, set out the cut-to-fill strategy, and agree what gets carted versus reused
Set up site: access, silt and sediment controls, stockpile areas and traffic management where the job needs it
Strip, bulk earthwork to design, then trim to subgrade and proof-roll the platform
Cut and lay drainage and services as the sequence requires, with our own registered drainlayers
Backfill, compact, reinstate and hand back a platform the next trade can build on, with the records to match
Where drainage is part of the scope, those steps interleave rather than run end to end, and that is the point of having both trades in one crew. We are not waiting on another subcontractor to finish before our pipe goes in, and you are not managing the gap between them.
Where we work
We are based in Pukekohe and the bulk of our work sits across South and West Auckland and the wider Franklin district. Regular ground includes Pukekohe, Franklin, Papakura, Takanini, Drury, Karaka, Paerata, Pokeno, Manukau, Wiri, Hobsonville, Whangaparaoa, Silverdale, Kumeu and Riverhead. With our own transporter we move plant across that footprint without leaning on hired floats.
We also run a permanent crew in Queenstown, so the South Island work is staffed and resourced locally rather than flown in for the day. If your site sits inside or near those areas, talk to us; if it is a bit outside, talk to us anyway, because plant mobility is rarely the thing that stops a job.
Common questions from developers and builders
Can you handle both the earthworks and the drainage on one contract?
Yes, and it is how we prefer to work. We run civil and drainage as one operation with registered drainlayers in the crew, so the same team cuts your platform and lays your stormwater and wastewater. That removes the interface argument over levels and falls, and it means the trench is dug by people who understand the pipe going into it.
Do you own your plant or sub-hire it?
We own our fleet, including eleven excavators from 5 to 35 tonne, three JCB telehandlers, trucks and trailers, a hydro-vac, and an articulated transporter rated to 25 tonne. Owning the gear and the transporter means your programme is not waiting on a hire yard or someone else float, and the operators in the seats know the machines.

Do you work outside South Auckland?
Our base is Pukekohe and most jobs sit across South and West Auckland and Franklin, but we move plant across that footprint on our own transporter and we keep a permanent crew in Queenstown.
