Bulk cartage looks simple from the outside. Move spoil off site, bring metal in, keep the diggers fed. On a live civil job it is rarely that tidy. Trucks turn up when the dig is not ready, aggregate arrives off-spec, a single blocked access point stalls a whole crew, and the cost of a stood-down excavator dwarfs whatever you thought you saved on cartage. We have run earthworks and drainage across South Auckland and Franklin for about twenty years, and the bulk movement of material is not a bolt-on to that work. It is the bloodstream.
Draeinail Construction is a civil and drainage contractor based in Pukekohe, with crews working across Auckland and a permanent team in Queenstown. We move our own material with our own gear: eleven excavators from five to thirty-five tonnes, three JCB telehandlers, an articulated transporter rated to twenty-five tonnes, plus trucks and trailers. That matters to a developer or a head contractor for one reason. When cartage and excavation sit under one roof, the haul plan and the dig plan are the same plan. Nobody is waiting on a subbie of a subbie, and nobody is pointing at the other guy when the metal is late.

What bulk cartage actually involves on a civil site
Cartage on a construction job breaks into two directions, and they are usually happening at once. Spoil and unsuitable material come off site; imported aggregate, sand and metal come on. Get the sequencing wrong and you pay twice, once to truck material out and again to bring the right stuff back in.
The volumes on a subdivision or an infrastructure job add up fast. A single trench line for a new sewer or stormwater main generates spoil along its full length, and not all of it can go back as backfill. Some is contaminated, some is the wrong grade, some simply cannot be compacted to the standard the consent demands. That material has to be classified, loaded, hauled and tipped at a facility that will legally take it. We track where every load goes, because under the resource consent and the waste rules, the contractor carrying the material carries the responsibility.
On the import side, the discipline is the same in reverse. Bedding sand for pipe support, drainage metal for trench surround, GAP and AP basecourse for roads and hardstand, structural fill for building platforms. Each has a job and a spec, and substituting one for another to save a truck movement is how you end up digging it all out three months later.

Spoil removal and disposal
We classify material before it moves, not after. Clean fill, managed fill and contaminated spoil go to different places, and mixing them turns a cheap tip fee into an expensive one. Our crews load to the truck, the truck is matched to the access and the haul distance, and the destination is logged. On constrained urban sites, the hydro-vac earns its keep here too, lifting spoil from around live services where a bucket would be reckless.
Aggregate and metal supply
Bringing material in is where spec discipline shows. We supply and place bedding and surround for drainage runs, basecourse for roads and yards, and structural fill for platforms, all to the grade the design and the consent call for. Because we are placing it ourselves, compaction is not somebody else problem after the metal lands in a heap on site.
Our fleet, and why owning it changes the job
Plenty of outfits will quote you cartage and then go hire the trucks. We run our own. The fleet is the reason we can commit to a programme and hold to it.
That fleet includes eleven excavators spanning five to thirty-five tonnes, so we can match the machine to the trench, the platform or the tight residential lot rather than forcing one size onto every task. Three JCB telehandlers handle materials movement and placement around the site. The articulated transporter, rated to twenty-five tonnes, shifts our own plant between sites without waiting on a third-party float. Trucks and trailers run the cartage itself. A hydro-vac, bypass and dewatering pumps, trench and manhole shields, and our own traffic management round out the kit, which means a drainage job needing cartage does not fracture into six separate suppliers who have never worked together.
When the crew digging the trench is the same crew carting the spoil and placing the metal, the programme has one owner. That is the whole argument for keeping cartage in-house, and it is why our material movement holds up on jobs where the timeline cannot slip.
The practical payoff is coordination. A typical drainage or subdivision day might involve an excavator opening trench, a truck carting spoil out, a second truck bringing surround in, the telehandler placing pipe and the shields keeping the dig safe. When all of that answers to one site supervisor, you do not lose half a day to a no-show truck or a load of the wrong metal.
Compliance, safety and getting the spec right
Bulk cartage runs straight into compliance whether anyone likes it or not. Material classification, disposal, load security, traffic management on the road and around the site, dust and sediment control. Skip any of it and you are exposed.
Our crews are Site Safe trained and competency-assessed against the Construction Safety Council Tier 1 framework. The people on our trucks and machines hold the relevant endorsements: confined space, first aid, traffic control and driver endorsements, backed by documented safe operating procedures and our own health and safety system. We provide our own traffic management, which on cartage work is not a nicety. Loading and unloading on or near a live road is one of the higher-risk parts of any civil job, and having traffic management under the same roof as the cartage keeps the controls consistent.
On the spec side, aggregate is only as good as how it is placed and tested. Bedding and surround to the pipe manufacturer bedding class, basecourse compacted in layers to the design density, structural fill placed and tested to the geotechnical requirement. These are ordinary civil standards, and meeting them is the difference between a job that passes its as-builts and one that gets dug up.
Where bulk cartage fits in a wider civil package
Most clients do not actually want cartage on its own. They want a trench dug, a main laid, a platform built or a subdivision brought to ground level, with the material movement handled as part of that. Cartage is one line in a larger scope, and it is most efficient when it is planned alongside the dig rather than bolted on.
We work across infrastructure, drainage, subdivision and energy civils, and bulk material movement underpins all four. On public infrastructure we have laid public sewer on the Penlink project for Fulton Hogan and delivered Tauriko enabling works for Downer. On drainage and stormwater we have upgraded systems at Paerata Station and the Wiri EMU depot for TRS. Do you supply aggregate, or just cart it?
Both. We supply bedding sand, drainage metal, basecourse and structural fill to the grade your design and consent require, and we place and compact it ourselves rather than tipping it on site for someone else to deal with. Because the same crew handles excavation, you get the material and the placement under one contract, tested to spec.
Can you handle cartage as part of a larger drainage or subdivision job?
That is how we prefer to work. Bulk cartage is most efficient when it is planned alongside the dig, so the haul sequence and the excavation sequence line up. We run earthworks, drainage, pipe-laying and reinstatement with our own fleet, and the material movement sits inside that scope rather than coming from a separate supplier you have to coordinate.
What about spoil disposal and compliance?
