Hiring an excavator is the easy part. Getting the right machine, on the right float, with an operator who reads ground conditions and knows what a service trench looks like before the locate marks fade, is where most plant hire falls down. We have run civil and drainage works across Auckland and Franklin for around twenty years, and we built our fleet to do the work, not to sit on a yard rate.
Draeinail runs eleven excavators from 5 to 35 tonnes, three JCB telehandlers, an articulated transporter rated to 25 tonnes, plus trucks, trailers, a hydro-vac, and the pumps and shoring you actually need on a live job. When you hire from us you are not just renting steel. You get an operator who has dug trench, set pipe, and worked under traffic management on subdivision and infrastructure sites, and a crew behind him who can put the rest of the kit on site the same week if the job grows.
That matters most when the schedule is tight or the ground is unknown. A developer or head contractor doesn't want to chase three suppliers for a machine, a float, and a competent driver, then carry the risk when the operator has never worked near live services. The fleet, and how to match a machine to the job
Excavator selection is the first thing we get right, because the wrong size costs you twice: once in standing time when a machine is too small to keep up, and again in damage and access grief when it's too big for the site. Our excavators span 5 to 35 tonnes, so we can put a 5-tonner down a residential right-of-way for service connections and bring a 30-plus-tonne machine to bulk earthworks or deep stormwater on the same week, off the same yard.
Here is roughly how the size bands map to the work we see most:
5 to 8 tonne: residential drainage, service trenches, tight subdivision lots, ROW connections, and work where ground protection and access width rule out anything bigger.
13 to 20 tonne: the workhorse band for subdivision civils, stormwater and wastewater mains, road crossings, and general muck-shifting where you need reach and dig depth without a heavy float.
20 to 35 tonne: bulk earthworks, deep manholes, detention tanks, and infrastructure trenching where dig depth, bucket size, and lift capacity carry the programme.
Excavators are only half of it. The three JCB telehandlers handle materials, pipe, and shoring around the site so your excavator stays in the trench instead of doubling as a crane. Our articulated transporter, rated to 25 tonnes, moves the heavy machines and gear between sites without you arranging a separate float each time. For pipe runs that can't be open-cut near live infrastructure, the hydro-vac does precision potholing and service location without the risk of a bucket finding a cable. Add bypass and dewatering pumps, trench and manhole shields, and our own traffic management, and a single hire can cover a full work package rather than one task.
Operators who do the work, not just steer the machine
An operator is the difference between plant hire and a working crew. Ours are competency-assessed to the Construction Safety Council Tier 1 framework, Site Safe trained, and carry confined space, first aid, traffic control, and driver endorsements where the work calls for it. They run to documented safe operating procedures and our own health and safety system, not a printout that lives in the glovebox.
More to the point, our operators come out of a drainage and civil background. Several of our staff are registered drainlayers, and the people running the machines understand grade, fall, bedding, and what's at stake when you're trenching alongside a live main. They read the locate marks, they pothole before they dig deep, and they know when to stop and call it rather than push through unknown ground. If your programme involves working near Vector's network, alongside live sewer, or under traffic, that judgement is worth more than the hourly rate on any machine.
The cheapest excavator on site is the one that finishes the work without hitting a service, standing idle, or coming back to redo a trench. Machine rate is the small number; competent operation is where the real cost lives.
Because we are a contractor first, the operator on your hire can also flag the things a pure plant-hire driver wouldn't: a trench that needs shoring before anyone enters, a dewatering problem building up downstream, a clash between the design and what's actually in the ground. You get a set of eyes that have seen the job before, not just a body in the seat.
Wet hire, dry hire, and full work packages
Most of our excavator and operator hire is wet hire: machine, operator, fuel, and the back-up of a contracting business that can scale the job. That's the model most developers and head contractors want, because it puts the operating risk and the maintenance on us and gives you a known crew you can schedule against.
When dry hire makes sense
If you have your own competent, certified operators and you simply need the machine, dry hire is available on suitable units. We will talk through the unit, its attachments, and the transport before it leaves the yard, and we expect the same standard of operation and ground awareness on our gear that we'd apply ourselves. For most clients, though, the value is in the operator coming with the machine.
Scaling to a full package
Where a single machine isn't enough, we step up to a full work package: multiple excavators, telehandlers, shoring, pumps, traffic management, and the drainlaying crew to install and certify. That's the same capability we bring to our subcontract work, so a hire that starts as one machine can grow into a managed scope without you re-tendering. Talk to us early if you can see the job expanding; it's easier to plan the float and the crew than to bolt them on under pressure.

Where we work, and how to get a machine on site
We're based in Pukekohe and work across Franklin and the wider South and West of Auckland: Papakura, Takanini, Drury, Karaka, Paerata, Pokeno, Manukau, Wiri, Hobsonville, Whangaparaoa, Silverdale, Kumeu, and Riverhead. We also run a permanent crew in Queenstown, so projects in the South Island aren't out of reach. Getting a machine to site is straightforward:

What size excavators can I hire from Draeinail?

Do you offer dry hire as well as wet hire?
Most of our hire is wet hire, machine plus operator, because that's what gives you a competent crew and puts the operating risk on us. Dry hire is available on suitable units if you have your own certified operators. We'll walk you through the machine, attachments, and transport either way, and for most clients the operator coming with the machine is where the value sits.
What if the job is bigger than one machine?
Then we scale it.
