Most of what fails on a civil job underground was never the pipe you came to lay. It's the service you didn't know was there. A live 11kV cable run 200mm shallower than the as-built said. A gas main that nobody recorded when the street was widened. A fibre bundle feeding a hospital. Hit one with a bucket and the job stops, the cost runs away from you, and on a bad day someone gets hurt. Hydro excavation exists to take that risk off the table.
We run a truck-mounted hydro-vac as part of our plant fleet, and we use it the way an infrastructure contractor should: to expose live services without touching them, to pothole before we dig, and to work in tight or sensitive ground where a digger has no business being. Pressurised water cuts and breaks the soil; a vacuum lifts the spoil straight into the tank. Nothing rigid goes near the asset. The cable, the main, the duct, all of it stays intact while the ground around it comes away clean.
This page sets out how we approach non-destructive digging across our South Auckland base in Pukekohe and Franklin, and on the wider network we work, from Papakura and Takanini through Drury, Karaka and Pokeno up to Hobsonville, Whangaparaoa and the northwest. We've potholed and located services on live network for the people who own that network, and the method below is the one we hold our own crews to.
What hydro excavation actually is, and why a bucket can't do it
Hydro excavation, sometimes called non-destructive digging or NDD, removes ground with two things working together. High-pressure water breaks the soil down into slurry. A vacuum, drawing through a large-bore hose, lifts that slurry off the dig and into a holding tank on the truck. There's no cutting edge, no rotating tool, no point load on anything buried. That's the whole point. You can expose a cable or a fibre duct and leave it sitting there untouched, ready to verify, mark and work around.
Compare that to a mechanical dig. An excavator bucket is a blunt instrument by design, and it has to be; it's there to move volume. Near a known service you slow down, you hand-dig the last stretch, and you still carry real risk because the spoil hides the asset until the moment the steel's already on it. Hydro takes that uncertainty out. The operator can see the ground giving way and ease off the instant an asset shows. It's controlled in a way a bucket never will be.

Where it's the right tool
Hydro isn't the cheapest way to shift dirt and we won't pretend it is. It earns its place where the consequence of getting it wrong is high, or where access is too tight for plant. That covers a lot of real civil work.

Our non-destructive digging process
A clean hydro job is mostly what happens before the hose comes off the truck. We treat location and planning as the work, not the warm-up. Here's the sequence we run.
Confirm the services. We pull the asset owner's plans, scan the area with electromagnetic locating gear, and mark up what's there before anyone breaks ground. Plans are a guide, not gospel; the scan and the dig are what prove position.
Set up safely. Traffic management goes in where it's needed, the exclusion zone is established, and the crew runs through the task and its hazards. We bring our own traffic management, so the site control matches the dig rather than waiting on a third party.
Pothole and expose. Water breaks the ground, the vac lifts the spoil, and we open neat windows down onto each service. Depths and offsets get recorded against the as-builts so the next crew, and the asset owner, know exactly what's down there.
Verify and work. With the asset proven and visible, the trench, bore launch, connection or repair goes ahead with the real layout in front of you, not a drawing that might be a metre out.
Reinstate. Spoil is taken off site for disposal, the excavation is backfilled and compacted to spec, and the surface is reinstated. We close out with a record of what was found and where.
That record matters more than people expect. When you've potholed every crossing and logged the depths, the head contractor inherits a corridor they can actually trust. The next trade isn't guessing. That's the difference between a site that runs and a site that stops every time someone hits something nobody mapped.
The cheapest metre of trench is the one you dig knowing exactly what's under it. Everything we do around live services is built to give the next crew that certainty before the bucket ever swings.
Working live: how we keep services intact
Daylighting a live cable or an in-service main is precision work, and we resource it like precision work. The operator controls water pressure to suit the ground and the asset; you don't run high pressure hard onto an exposed cable jacket or a coated main, and our crews know where those lines are. The vac does the lifting so nobody's barrowing wet spoil out of a deep hole by hand.
On energy and comms corridors that's the standard expectation, not a nice-to-have. We've done energy civils as a subcontractor to Ventia and across Vector's programme, and a data centre upgrade for Spark in Takanini, the sort of environment where a strike isn't an inconvenience, it's an outage with a name attached. Non-destructive digging is how you prove a service and work alongside it without becoming that name.
The crews and the kit behind it
The hydro-vac is one piece of a fleet built for civil and drainage work: eleven excavators from 5 to 35 tonne, three JCB telehandlers, an articulated transporter rated to 25 tonne, plus bypass and dewatering pumps, trench and manhole shields, and our own traffic management. That depth matters on real sites, because a pothole rarely stands alone. It feeds a trench, a connection, a structure, and having the plant and the drainlayers on the same crew means the work flows instead of stalling between subcontractors.
Our people are Site Safe trained and competency-assessed to the Construction Safety Council Tier 1 framework, with confined space, first aid, traffic control and the driver endorsements the gear demands. We run documented safe operating procedures and a custom health and safety system, and we hold registered drainlayers on the team. About 25 staff, roughly 20 years in the ground, working out of Pukekohe and Franklin with a permanent crew in Queenstown.
Where this fits in a civil programme
Hydro excavation is rarely the job; it's the part of the job that protects everything else. On subdivision and infrastructure work it's the first move into a live corridor and the safest way to prove a connection point. We've put services in on Penlink for Fulton Hogan, run enabling works at Tauriko for Downer, delivered stormwater upgrades at Paerata Station and the Wiri EMU depot for TRS, and handled subdivision civils at Hobsonville for TDM. Different clients, different ground, same underlying discipline: know what's there before you commit plant to it.
Because we're a full civil and drainage contractor and not a single-truck hydro operator, the potholing connects to the rest of the build. Locate the service, expose it, then lay the drainage, sink the tank, cut the trench or make the connection with our own crews and plant. We've built detention tanks, including one for Ryman, and put in the deep drainage that subdivisions live or die on. The hydro-vac is the quiet first step that keeps all of it on programme.

Frequently asked questions
How do you know where the services are before you start?
We work off the asset owner's plans, then prove them with electromagnetic locating gear before anyone breaks ground. Plans get out of date, especially after road works or earlier reinstatement, so the scan and the pothole are what we trust. Once a service is daylighted, we record its actual depth and offset against the as-builts so the information is right for everyone who follows.
Is hydro excavation safe to use right on top of a live power cable or gas main?
Yes, that's exactly what it's built for. There's no rigid cutting tool involved, so the cable or main stays intact while the soil around it is broken down by water and lifted out by vacuum. Our operators control the water pressure to suit the asset and the ground, and the crews are competency-assessed and trained for working live, including confined space and traffic control where the job calls for it.
Can you do the trenching and drainage too, or only the potholing?
Both, on the same crew. We're a civil and drainage contractor with registered drainlayers and a full plant fleet, so once services are proven we lay the pipe, build the chamber, sink the tank or make the connection without handing off to another subcontractor. Keeping it under one crew is usually faster and removes the gaps where sites tend to stall.

Do you bring your own traffic management?
We do. On a live corridor the site control has to match the dig, and waiting on a third-party crew to set up or change a layout costs you time you don't have. Running our own traffic management means the exclusion zone, the signage and the staging move with the work instead of holding it up.
