Health and safety isn't a folder we hand over at the start of a job. It's how the work gets done, day after day, on live carriageways, in deep trenches, next to energised cable and inside confined chambers. We've run civil and drainage crews for about 20 years out of Pukekohe, and we've earned the right to work alongside head contractors who don't take chances. That trust gets rebuilt on every site, with paperwork that holds up and crews who know exactly what they're doing before the bucket goes in the ground.

If you're a developer, builder or project manager bringing a civil contractor onto your site, you're putting your own safety record in their hands. A subcontractor with a sloppy system becomes your problem fast: stop-work notices, WorkSafe attention, a fatality you'll never stop carrying. So this page lays out exactly how we're set up. Not slogans. The accreditations, the competencies, the systems and the field practices that let us turn up to a Fulton Hogan or Downer site and be treated as a known quantity.

We've delivered public sewer on the Penlink alignment for Fulton Hogan, enabling works at Tauriko for Downer, stormwater upgrades at Paerata Station and the Wiri EMU depot for TRS, and energy civils across Vector's programme and for Ventia. Those clients audit. They don't subcontract to a crew that can't show its working. That's the bar we hold ourselves to, and it's the bar this document is written against.

Accreditation and competency, and what each one actually covers

Accreditation gets thrown around loosely in this industry, so it's worth being precise about what we hold and what it means on the ground. Our crews are Site Safe trained, which is the baseline expectation for anyone working on a managed New Zealand construction site. Beyond that, our people are competency-assessed against the Construction Safety Council Tier 1 framework, so a head contractor can see at a glance that the operator on their site has been measured against a recognised standard, not just told to be careful.

Competency is role-specific, and we treat it that way. The operator on a 35-tonne excavator, the labourer in the trench, the drainlayer signing off the connection and the spotter on the traffic plan each carry the tickets the task demands. We hold confined space, first aid, traffic control and the driver endorsements our fleet and transport work require. Where the job calls for a registered drainlayer, a registered drainlayer does the work. That isn't a courtesy. It's how drainage gets signed off properly and how you avoid a connection that fails inspection or, worse, fails in service.

Why Tier 1 competency assessment matters to a head contractor

When you tender a package, you're carrying the safety performance of every crew under you. The Construction Safety Council Tier 1 framework gives you a documented, third-party-aligned picture of how our operators have been assessed, which shortens your own prequalification and pre-start checks. You're not taking our word for it; you're looking at competencies measured against a published standard. For a PM running multiple subcontractors, that's the difference between a clean pre-start and an afternoon spent chasing records.

The safety system behind the crew

Tickets tell you what a person can do. A system tells you how the work is actually controlled. We run a custom health and safety system built for the work we do, not a generic template bought off a shelf and never opened. It's backed by documented safe operating procedures for the plant and tasks that carry real risk: excavation and trenching, confined space entry, lifting with the telehandlers, working near services, and traffic management.

Each safe operating procedure is a working document, not wallpaper. It sets out the hazards, the controls, the competencies required and the steps the crew follows. Before a non-routine task, we work through it, not around it. That discipline is what lets us scale a crew up onto a large enabling-works package and keep the same standard across every face of the job.

A safety system only earns its keep when the crew in the trench can quote it back to you. Ours is written to be used at the work face, not filed for an auditor who never visits the site.

Documentation matters because it's auditable. When a head contractor or principal asks for our SWMS, our SOPs or our competency records, we produce them; we don't go quiet and start writing them after the request lands. That readiness is part of why we hold relationships with contractors like TRS, Ventia and Downer, who don't have the patience for a subbie that treats paperwork as an afterthought.

Excavation, confined space and working near services

Most of what can go badly wrong on a drainage and civil job lives in three places: the trench, the chamber, and the ground around buried services. We've built our controls around those three.

Trenching and ground stability

An unsupported trench is one of the fastest ways to kill someone on a civil site, and it gives no warning. We carry trench and manhole shields and use them. Where ground, depth or proximity to structures calls for shoring or battering, that's planned before the dig, not improvised once the walls start moving. The shields also let us keep people working safely at depth on deep stormwater and sewer runs rather than exposing them to a face that hasn't been assessed.

Confined space entry

Manholes, wet wells and large chambers are confined spaces, and we treat them as such. Our people hold confined space competency, entries are controlled, and atmospheres are managed before anyone goes in. On detention and connection work, like a Ryman detention tank or a connection into a live network, that discipline isn't optional; it's the line between a routine entry and a confined-space emergency.

Locating and protecting buried services

Energy civils for Vector and Ventia, and the data centre upgrade we did for Spark in Takanini, put our crews right alongside live cable and critical infrastructure. We plan for service strikes before they happen: locate, prove, then dig. Our hydro-vac does the careful work, exposing services without the risk a toothed bucket brings near a cable or a fibre run. On energy and telecommunications sites that capability isn't a nice-to-have; it's the reason we get asked back.

Traffic management and the public interface

A lot of our work happens on or beside live roads. Public sewer on Penlink, stormwater at Paerata Station, subdivision works at Hobsonville for TDM: in each case, the public and the workforce share the same corridor, separated only by a traffic plan that has to be right. We run our own traffic management rather than handing that responsibility to a third party we can't control on the day.

Doing it in-house means the people setting out the cones understand the dig, the plant movements and where the crew will be standing, because they're part of the same operation. It also means we can adjust a layout quickly when site conditions change, instead of waiting on an external provider while a half-set-up site sits exposed. For a principal, fewer subcontractor interfaces around live traffic means fewer gaps for something to fall through.

Our operators hold the traffic control competencies and the driver endorsements the work requires, and that extends to moving plant. With 11 excavators from 5 to 35 tonne, three JCB telehandlers and an articulated transporter rated to 25 tonne, getting machines on and off site safely is its own controlled task. We plan loads, routes and laydown so the public never meets a tracked machine on the move without a plan around it.

Are your crews qualified to work on our managed construction site?

Yes. These controls are written into our safe operating procedures and followed at the work face, not just on paper.

What happens when you're digging near live services?

We locate and prove services before we dig, then use our hydro-vac to expose them without the risk a toothed bucket brings near cable or fibre. That approach is how we've worked safely on energy civils for Vector and Ventia and on the Spark data centre upgrade in Takanini. Protecting buried infrastructure is planned into the job, not handled on the fly.

Do you handle your own traffic management?

Yes, we run traffic management in-house with operators who hold the required competencies. Because the people setting out the layout understand the dig and the plant movements, the public interface stays controlled and we can adjust quickly when conditions change. That removes a subcontractor interface around live traffic, which is one fewer gap for a principal to manage.
